SURFnet invited CineGrid Co-founder Laurin Herr to deliver the keynote at the 20th anniversary SURFnet Relatiedagen being held May 14-15, 2008 in Noordwijkerhout, Holland.

Herr’s talk, titled “Building a New User Community for Very High Quality Media Applications on Very High Speed Networks,” featured various CineGrid Exchange content, streamed in 4K over networks and JPEG 2000 decoded in real-time for projection on a large screen with 5.1 surround sound in the auditorium.

This landmark presentation included a new, never-seen-before 4K animation of the Global Lambda Integrated Facility (GLIF) based on newly updated GLIF network maps. The 2008 GLIF animation in 4K has been created by a group of CineGrid members. The process of updating the data base of globe-spanning 1 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps and, increasingly, 10 Gbps links that constitute the 2008 GLIF infrastructure was coordinated by Maxine Brown at UIC/EVL. The new GLIF network data was then mapped to geographically accurate flat image of the Earth provided by NASA, visualized, animated and rendered in full-color at 4K resolution by Robert Patterson of the Advanced Visualization Laboratory at UIUC/NCSA. The rendered, uncompressed 4K frames were transferred over the Illinois I-Wire from NCSA to StarLight in Chicago and then via CAVEwave to UCSD/CAlit2 in San Diego for JPEG 2000 compression and quality-assurance 4K screening in the Calit2 auditorium. The compressed files were then transferred over CAVEwave from Calit2 via StarLight , and then over SURFnet to servers at the University of Amsterdam in preparation for the CineGrid keynote at the SURFnet meeting.

The SURFnet Relatiedagen are organized by SURFnet every two years to reinforce contact with its connected institutions. The conference, which is a two day event, provides an overview of services, innovation and best practices as well as an opportunity to meet each other face-to-face.

The conference is attended by some 300 visitors, representing institutions of higher education and research in the Netherlands. The presentations are also available through streaming video, both live and on demand.

The SURFnet Relatiedagen took place on 14-15 May 2008 at Hotel de Leeuwenhorst in Noordwijkerhout, Holland.
